I want to make changes to my 401k allocations, but I am not sure what to choose. Also, my IRAs are in the same boat as my 401k (sinking fast). Do I have the option of rolling my IRAs into a safer investment? I do not like risk.
Put your money in a “bear fund.” This is a mutual fund that makes money during a recession.
My international stocks are up 40% this year. Can’t say the same about my domestic stocks.
Another good idea is those target date retirement funds from Vanguard. They start with a high stock, low bond mix and adjust to less stocks and more bonds as you age. Those haven’t dropped that much. They were recommended by the February 2008 issue of Money magazine.
Lastly, if you are not getting close to retirement, then you should be jumping for joy. You have the opportunity to buy stocks at rock bottom prices. Buy low (now) and sell high (when you retire).
Oh and a no-risk investment would be government bonds or a CD at a bank that’s FDIC insured. Keep in mind, no risk equals crappy returns. If I were you, I wouldn’t change your 401(k), I’d change your attitude toward risk. With risk comes reward.
